Not Your Mother’s Spring Cleaning

spring cleaning Here we are in April! The month of Spring flowers... which always brightens my mood. It is the month of Spring cleaning.... or at least the start of it, depending on where you live.  When I lived in Vermont, then Montreal and then New York, I remember (not so) patiently waiting for the day when the mud room could be cleared, the boot trays retired, and the winter coats put away. Snowstorms are not that uncommon in April, it turns out. That Lion of Winter often wore out his welcome at my house. Speaking of Spring cleaning... Spring is the favored time of year for the body to renew itself and an excellent time for a cleanse and any kind of detoxification.  Some cultures do this cleansing as a matter of course.  It's a seasonal thing. In my opinion, that makes sense.  And, truth be told, this "cleanse" is more like giving your body/digestive system a little vacation. I am not in favor of the "cleansing" touted by the MLM corporations, who would have you believe that cleansing is to be done non-stop with ridiculously overpriced products which can be harmful. Let me be clear, here. Your body already has a very efficient cleansing system. It's called your liver, gallbladder and lymphatic system.  Your job is to feed your body clean fuel - real food which your body can digest and assimilate. Your job is to feed your body the fuel that it needs. To help your liver, concentrate on an intake of chlorophyll rich foods provided by grass sprouts that are so readily available in grocery stores. Other green foods that are beneficial are kale, parsley, and collard greens. Eating these foods will help decongest your liver and help bring your body into harmony with the season. To help bring the rest of you into harmony with the season, take short breaks during the day and go outside. Walk around the block and observe what’s popping up in the flowerbeds. Listen to the sounds of spring as birds busily fly overhead foraging for nest material. Remember, you are a part of nature and spring is the time to be out to celebrate the new life around you.
